First Impression

A glimpse into the entrance area of the Donauturm from its opening year, 1964: clean lines, modern materials, and an atmosphere of optimism welcomed the very first visitors. From here, the ride began in what were then Europe’s fastest elevators – an experience that marked the start of a whole new perspective on Vienna.

Tradition with Speed

The Donauturm elevators were the fastest in Europe when the tower opened in 1964 – built by Ing. St. Sowitsch & Co.
What makes them special: To this day, each ride is accompanied by a lift operator – a charming tradition that has been upheld for over 60 years.

High capacity & comfort

With a capacity of 1,600 people per hour, the lifts ensure smooth transport. A special highlight: a viewing window in the lift roof allows you to experience the ride live!

Austria's first double-decker lift

One lift is a double-decker model - the first of its kind in Austria! While visitors glide upwards, deliveries are simultaneously transported to the tower kitchen at 165 metres in the lower section.

Technical modernisation 2010

After 20 million passengers and 750,000 kilometres, the lifts were refurbished in 2010. The engines and cabins were modernised - and over 40% of energy was saved thanks to regenerative drives.
